7 Signs of a Twitter-holic: Are You Addicted Yet?
  • Buffer

We both love Twitter for so many reasons. The main reason is that we learn and share with people who we would never have had the chance to meet if not for the social networking platform. Among all the social networking sites, Twitter is very special to us. We met, connected and now have a special bond that would not have been possible if we were not as active as we are on Twitter. But our love story is not the main topic for today’s post. Maybe in the near future we will be sharing our experience with you.

In the beginning of our Twitter journey, things were a lot different. We did not have tools to help schedule tweets, nor were there people who were as active as us.  We were always asked why we tweet so much hence the branding “Twitter-holic.”  Have you just recently joined Twitter? Are you wondering if you can be considered a Twitterholic?  Here are some signs that may help enlighten you:

1.  Update your Twitter status the minute you wake up – When you sleep with your smart phone or iPad next to you so that you can see what is happening around the Twitter universe even before you have had breakfast and even before brushing your teeth, you’ll know you are on the road to becoming a Twitter-holic.

2. You see keyboard marks on your face – What if tweeting is more important to you than sleep? We both have had our share of waking up with keyboard marks and stiff necks because we fell asleep on our computer keyboards. Can you blame us? Twitter is a place where you can have conversations with friends from all over the world. There is always someone to talk with 24/7. Besides it’s really fun!

3. Open at least 3 to 4 Twitter clients when updating your stream – If you are a geek like us, you have all sorts of tools available on all your devices that you use everyday. We find it easier to use several tools when updating our status and reading tweets.  If you have at least 3 or 4 Twitter clients open at the same time so that you don’t miss a tweet, you’ll know you are becoming a Twitter-holic

4.  Use #hashtags when communicating even in non Twitter conversations – You know someone is a really heavy Twitter user when they use #hashtags on platforms that are not Twitter related.  For those who do not know what #hashtags are on Twitter, it is a search tool that allows you to monitor a conversation about a particular topic. Just click on the hashtag and you will see all the conversations about that topic.

5.  Share photos of what you eat and drink via twitpic, yfrog etc – We are both guilty of this. We are just lucky we both are so into it that we don’t mind when we have to stop and take a picture of food we eat or anything that is interesting. We love sharing our experiences with our friends and find it fun!! #thatisall #donotjudge

6. LOL in front of your computer –  Aside from the information that you can learn from Twitter, there are connections that you make on the platform that enables you to share jokes, funny banter among friends and funny tweets too.  If you have had the opportunity to build those relationships and have found people who share funny pics and jokes, then we are sure that you have laughed out loud in front of your computers.  You have probably also encountered some strange looks by people who happen to be watching you.

7.  Get upset and repost on other social sites when Twitter is down – When you get upset when you get the “fail whale” and share on Facebook or even Google Plus that Twitter is down, then you can be sure you are one of us; a full fledge Twitter-holic.

Being addicted to Twitter is something that is frowned upon by those who do not get the social site and consider it a time waster.  It can be, especially if one does not get any benefit from tweeting or if it has a negative effect on your work or family life. If you learn and connect with amazing people like we have it is a site that can literally change your life and make your world bigger. One tip we always offer is make sure you also find balance with your online and offline life.  Are you Twitter-holic?  Did we miss a sign here? Let us know. We would love to hear from you.

We’re guilty of all of these!

Here are a few that you forgot:
    - You close your Macbook and pick up your iPhone.
    - You tweet things instead of writing them down to take notes.
    - You log out of Twitter and log right back in.

Great article! Definitely had us chuckling.
