9 Twitter Styles: Which One Is Yours
  • Buffer

Social media is huge.  Eight years ago no one had an idea that it would grow this fast.  People now communicate differently. If you watch brands on TV or see their ads on the newspapers or billboards you will notice that they now include the URLs of their social media pages so their customers can interact with them in real time.  We even add our own URLs on our email signatures and business cards.

Twitter is our favorite tool to communicate and network with old and new friends.  We get our news and express our opinions and our feelings 140 characters at a time. Would you believe that because of the popularity of Twitter, new words are now part of our vocabulary. Words like ReTweet, Twitinvite and twalk are commonplace.  You can check more words here. People tweet differently and a great way to see the style of a particular person on Twitter is through .  Klout analyzes not just the influence but also the style of one’s tweets.  Here is our take on it.

The Curator – The person who shares not only useful content to his or her followers but also makes sure they retweet the best tweets from the people they follow. They are good listeners and they are careful to share information that is relevant to the people that they tweet with everyday.

The Specialist/Thought Leader  – They target a particular niche.  They tweet information based on their interest. They are well respected in the particular field they are in and their opinion is highly valued by the people that follow them.

The Link Bomber – They only share links on their stream and they rarely engage anyone in conversation.

The Follow Me/I’ll Follow You – Numbers is what they concentrate on. They will often tweet someone and tell them to follow them to the point of annoying other Twitter users.

The Newsmaker - They are usually celebrities and well know personalities.  Rockstars, if you will, of the Twitter universe.  People watch for their tweets.

The Connector – They are not only respected in their particular fields but also are well loved because they go out of their way to connect and recommend the best people to follow on Twitter.

The Conversationalist - They engage a lot and rarely tweet links or information but rather talk to people on their stream. They love personal interaction.

The Retweetist - They retweet more than share links that they find on their own.  They follow people who they feel have the same interests as themselves and share the info they find to their followers.

Last but not the least are the Twitter-holics, they tweet like there is no tomorrow. If you look at their stream you will see that they are on the site 24/7.  They are simply addicted to tweeting and will tweet anything from what is happening to them to the food they eat, to the clothes they plan to wear to a dinner party.

But no matter what your style is, we feel as long as you are having fun and continually learning and being yourself, you can’t go wrong.  This is a free world and you should do what you feel is right for you. We often find it silly when we see people complaining about how the people they follow tweet.  It is really simple, if you don’t like a particular style of tweeting, just unfollow.  It just takes one click.  It is really interesting to know what style you feel you fall into.  Tell us here by leaving us a comment.

I like the definitions. I tend to think of the “thought leader” as getting more retweets than the “specialist.” The thought leader usually has a sizeable true reach. I am cross between a specialist and conversationlist, I think. Per Klout, I am a specialist.

Thank you Melody. Your Starbucks blog is awesome and demonstrates to me that you are a thought leader! In the end though, as long as you are being yourself and sharing your unique self, your definitely doing it right, IMHO.

I’d have to guess I’m part Curator, Connector and Conversationalist, a touch Specialist with a little of my own ‘X’ factor style tossed in the mix. Agreeing on the simple click.. I’m not afraid to unfollow if I don’t care for a style. FWIW.

    I don’t feel I can be classified like anything…

I can definitely understand. The most important thing is to always be yourself. Being unique is probably the most important Twitter style there is. :-)

Great article :) I am probably a mix of several of these styles. When you look at it most real engaging people on Twitter probably are a mix.

Very true Rob!! I see a lot of people with bits of all the styles. That uniqueness is really what makes Twitter great for me. :-)
