Those who are close to me know that I’m an avid Apple fan boy. Every time a new Apple device or gadget is announced, I’m always right there ready to get my hands on it, especially if it’s an iPhone. Along with getting the latest Apple goodness, I would always get AppleCare to make sure I’m protected, just in case anything happened to my phone.
For years I never had to take advantage of AppleCare. So when the iPhone 5S came out, I decided to save a few bucks and skip getting the extra coverage. The problem is when we feel we don’t really need something we usually get proven wrong. Have you ever experienced “Switchers Remorse”? Here’s my story.
Back in August 2013, my wife and I were invited to attend a working retreat with a client. The location was in beautiful St. Augustine Florida. The week prior to the trip, the iPhone 5S was released. As is our tradition when a new iPhone comes out, we get up extra early and out of the house by 2:00 am for a 40 minute drive to the Apple Store to make sure we get there early and save our place in line with all the other Apple fanatics!
The timing was so perfect! I could now take my brand new iPhone on our trip to Florida. Of course, our trip wasn’t all work. We were able to spend our afternoons by the beach playing touch football or just taking a relaxing swim.
I guess I was having such a great time that I forgot I had my brand new iPhone in my shorts pocket. You see the water was perfect and the waves were so inviting. After 30 minutes of splashing around I got out of the water and felt something just wasn’t right. I reached into my pocket and pulled out my now drenched iPhone 5S. What a bummer! Worse yet, I realized — I DON’T HAVE APPLECARE gah!!!
The good thing was that when we got back home, I was able to replace my phone for a minimal fee since it was under warranty. Big lesson learned to be sure. I now have AppleCare and the peace of mind that goes along with it. So no matter what happens, even if I accidentally swim with my phone again, I don’t have to worry.
How about you? Do you have a story when you made a decision, only to find that that you regretted it and actually reversed course? Tell me, I want to know.
