Keeping up with all the social media sites can be challenging. Yesterday I posted on Twitter, G+ and Instagram. I’m having trouble finding time to keep up with Facebook or to learn Periscope. It’s always interesting to see which posts spark the most engagement on which site. I can post something that initiates a long conversation on Twitter, yet that same post will be lukewarm on G+ and vice versa. It all got me thinking about content, and what kind of content is the most popular on each social network.
Obviously we all know that selfies and food pics are popular on Instagram. We know that news stories and blog post links are popular on Twitter. We know that quirky funnies are popular on G+. Or, is that not true? Could we be more effective by posting different types of content?
The team at Go-Gulf Web Technologies did their own research to determine what kinds of content we all like to share on different networks. Their infographic called What People Share on Social Networks lays it all out nicely.
It’s no surprise that pictures come in at number one. We’ve all learned how powerful images can be on social media. However, I was very happy to learn that the four most commonly shared emotions on social media are all positive, happy ones (awe, laughter, amusement, joy).
I was not surprised to learn that 85.7% of social media users in the United States like to share humorous content. We all live for a laugh here. It was interesting to learn that getting a piercing made it into the top 10 live events that people like to share on Facebook.
All of this goes back to the social media psychology which I find fascinating. If being a social media psychiatrist was a real thing, that is what I would want to be when I grow up. I hope you enjoy this infographic as much as I did!
